Katrina Vaughn is headed home to Ravensport, Rhode Island, for the first time in two years ... and she has bad news.
The daughter of best-selling thriller author C.P. Vaughn and his socialite wife, Kat knows better than to expect warm, fuzzy feelings when she tells her parents that things haven't been going so well for her at school. It's been years since something changed in the Vaughn household, and although Katrina doesn't know what happened between her parents that cleaved her family apart, one thing is perfectly clear: they're never going to be what they used to be, and Kat just wants to be anywhere but here.
What she doesn't anticipate on her first night back in Ravensport is that her wish to escape is about to be granted. While seeking refuge from her father's book release party, Kat slips and hits her head on her neighbor's dock, falling into the frigid waters of the marina before she can save herself.
Minutes or hours later, she's dragged aboard a ship called the Cygnus, where she coughs awake in the harsh sunlight of a world she no longer recognizes. Water logged and achy, Katrina is forced to face a crew of strangely dressed men and women, who whisper about magical artifacts, cities with names she's never heard, and a kingdom called Aniscere, which she's fairly certain she won't find on any map.
As Katrina fights to return to her real life, she's swept up in the quest of the mysterious Captain Laurier, whose stern demeanor and secretive ways certainly aren't helping her get home any faster. Yet as the days start to bleed into one another, and Kat starts to make friends aboard the Cygnus, she's faced with the realization that her life back home can't possibly compare to her adventures in Aniscere. Still, she's unwilling to give in to what she's beginning to feel.
