The following story is the result of a game I played with a fellow writer, a fan of Fantasy and Manga. Basically, I offered to email him the beginning of a story. He would write the next part and send it back to me. I would write the next part, send it, and so on. But he didn't have enough time to take part in this little game. I then suggested that we write a story in the form of a serial and send the parts to each other by e-mail, once a week, for two months. My plan was to turn it into a summer mini-series. Caught up in the story, this attempt lasted through autumn, and winter, and was finished in spring. So, my first thanks go to you, Jeremy. I'd also like to thank the most diligent critic of my writing: Renault. Your corrections and comments were very relevant and were a great help. I hope that I will, at long last, be able to buy you a drink and discuss it with you face to face. As we haven't seen each other for more than five years, we probably won't even recognise one another anymore. Through my writing I have had the privilege of meeting a lot of different people, from all walks of life, but mostly waiters and waitresses in the (far too) numerous Brussels cafés, Exki, Pain Quotidien, and others, where I write, as well as the hotel staff in the Novotel, where I was living. I thank all of you for your kindness and the interest you showed in my stories. Writing is a solitary process, but has its rewards. Another Stupid Spell is a first person high fantasy novel, the likes of which hasn't been seen in 60 years. The tone and vocabulary of the story shifts as our narrator, Sorch the orc, finds ways to enhance his intelligence. You get to grow as Sorch grows, learn as he learns, and share his most intimate thoughts. Sorch is an orc mage in a world where orcs are cursed with stupidity every time they cast a spell. The only spell he can safely cast is Enhance Intelligence, which boosts his IQ for a fraction of a second before the curse drains it all away again. Normally casting such a spell would be pointless, but Sorch's tribe has found a way to benefit. Magic that is cast near a mysterious artefact called the 'Voodoo Engine' causes invisible hands to appear, and these hands get work done for his tribe. Sorch is a slave to the Voodoo Engine, casting a single spell over and over again to avoid being beaten by the chief's warrior caste. I had this idea last night after a few drinks, a pounding headache, and an excessive amount of throat lozenges. In order to inspire me to write more often than I currently do, I am planning to write a new post every day and publish it, allowing me to rant about whatever is on my mind. Anything goes with this story. Maybe I will talk about something deep and metaphysical about the meaning of human existence, or rant about why my life sucks and how I prefer iced tea over hot tea. Anything goes. This is just an inspiration to allow me to write SOMETHING every single day of the year. Hopefully I can keep up.... If I end up deleting this story, I guess you'll know that I failed.
