Headstrong and witty, fourteen year old Jane Evans is happy living with her family in 19th century Wales. She dreams of a life of adventure and making sure her sisters, Dinah and Ruby, are safe and happy as well. But everything goes wrong when her parents go missing, and Jane and her sisters are left to fend for themselves. When they find out that their parents are alive, the question is: where? Fearing that their parents abandoned them, the sisters have only one option for survival, and that is reuniting with their parents. The sisters will stop at nothing to find them, no matter how far the search will bring them.

Living by her wits Jane's life is far from normal, she has her one steady fixture in her life, her beloved Dad (he has raised her as his own since her mother's passing), everything else is expendable until one of their cons goes bad; they meet an elderly lady (Bell) one evening at the train station and she makes them an offer too good to be true; as if fate had finally dealt them a good hand but their meeting is not coincidental. They are offered a home, Dad a job and the security they so desire in the quiet little seaside town of Whitstable, but not all is as it seems. Bell is shadowed by her loyal boys (the feral boys) the menacing youths riding around on their bikes with hoods up, lurking in the shadows. They are actually Deaths' Hounds of Hell that do Bells' bidding and are under strict instructions to watch over Jane. Jane is overwhelmed with premonitions, nightmares and flashbacks of her mothers' passing which are triggered by her arriving in Whitstable. She knows there is more than meets the eye when it comes to Bell. Bell is elusive about her life and her past, whilst still trying to bring Jane closer in. She is an enigma, charismatic yet harsh, her presence is felt by the community but feared by the church. Bell is a force to be reckoned with, she has the ability to bring grown men to their knees and pull out your darkest secrets, as if looking into your very soul. Why was she so desperate to bring Jane back to Whitstable ?
