Eleanor Nichols, a street-smart woman haunted by her mother's murder (a victim of a Ripper-like killer), is recruited by Detective Carter and his daughter, Isabelle, to help with a new series of murders mirroring the old Whitechapel killings. Despite her unconventional, "organic" methods and resistance to authority, they recognize her unique insights and determination. "reasonable accommodations" (a decent place to stay and whiskey) in exchange for her assistance. She immediately proves her worth by producing a blood-soaked handkerchief found at a crime scene, beating the police to the evidence. She also reveals a new symbol, a distorted lily, and a belief that the killer is marking his victims. The detectives, shocked by her resourcefulness but wary of her chaotic approach, agree to her terms with a warning to report directly to them. The chapter ends with Eleanor hinting at the value of her "rat informants," setting the stage for her unconventional investigative methods
