1.) A way of life in which people are caught up in a fiercely competitive struggle for upward social mobility.

2.) A situation in which several rats will compete in a race against each other.

Whatever those things were, they were multiplying. Multiplying fast. Slowly eating away from the inside out.

Whatever they were, whoever they were, weren't human anymore.

Innocent. Guilty. None of that mattered. There was no god. No heaven, no hell, no purgatory. Simply the dead, the living, and something in between.

And when the world crumbles at your feet, one of the worst possible things someone can do is to survive.
