What if Kenric survived the Everblaze? After Kenric burns away in the Everblaze, Oralie's life dissolves into sobs, sorrow, and despair. That is where Book Three of KOTLC ends - with love lost to fire. But what if Kenric didn't die in the flames? He promised to Oralie that they would be together, and he is a man of his word. However, fire isn't the only enemy. They must disappear from the hawking eyes of the Neverseen, and even fight against their own society in order leave their life of Councillors behind. Clad in soft, rose-colored nightgown, she hustled from her chair and to the door, her eyes scanning through the window curiously. But then her eyes widened, for it wasn't who she thought it was. It was a man. With red hair littered with dust and soot. Oralie felt like she got punched in the gut. Her body shivered so badly she nearly toppled over, but she grasped her door's handle and stabilized herself against the migraine that was cutting her brain into a zillion pieces. No. No it couldn't be, she thought. Exhilarated, baffled, and petrified for her life, Oralie turned the handle. The door hit the wall with a clang. Oralie gasped in sharply as she examined a man, covered in burns, leaning against her front porch's railing heavily. "Kenric?" she breathed, unable to trust the world anymore.
