9 year old Christi Anderson was born in Selma, Alabama. She has seen the way people were treated because of segregation. She didn't understand it. One day, she mets a girl who was not realizing what was going on either. They lived next door to each other. They became good friends until a few days later, Christi finds out that her friend wasn't playing with her anymore, she was playing with the other kids. At school, the same thing was going on. She didn't know what was going on, but she was determined to find out.

Kaylee Robinson is 17 and has been in Foster Care for nine years and she hates it. She hasn't really had much in life. Kaylee couldn't always get what she wanted. She doesn't really talk to people about her oldest brother who was killed whom she was living with before she ended up in Foster Care. One day she gets home from school to find out she was adopted by a wealthy family. She isn't to happy only because they're so happy and she feels that there's no reason to be happy. One day she has to have dinner with them and their friends and she meets their son August who seems not interested but deep down he really is.
