Just months after the new Cardassian Dominion alliance decimated the Demilitarized Zone, Starfleet is facing the prospect of war against a villain almost as dangerous as the Borg. Diplomats are hopeful for a treaty, however Starfleet prepares for war. Captain Peyton left his uniform behind when Starfleet turned their back on a people he loved, a people who were destroyed when the DMZ fell. However, Starfleet has asked him to return and lead a special project he had devised years ago to help bolster the fleets. Against his own personal feelings, he chooses to come back to help protect the Federation. Little did he expect to face his past and a new threat to the Federation within days of starting the project. Note to readers: This story was written twenty years ago. I revisited it and re-wrote it with a better eye after having published 17 books professionally since then. This is a my love letter to Star Trek that I grew up with. Any similarities to what has come out since then are coincidence. I did not add or change any of the story points or ideas in the re-write. On the station, Pahriketh, the skilled warrior of the Hakashans remains behind to prepare for a special test she hopes to pass. To help her is the meek Rogerah, the smallest Hakashan of the crew. While Pahriketh is loud, forceful, and enjoys life with gusto, Rogerah is quiet and would rather study. Rogerah harbors feelings for Pahriketh, but has never found courage to tell her. Now, Chris Henderson is making another play for the woman he desires, the glorious Pahriketh. To make matters worse, the Cultural and Customs, the C and C, has sent a representative to investigate the Hakashans suitability to be allowed on Federation owned property. Admiral Bonita Henderson struggles with keeping the C and C rep from evicting the Hakashans from the station while her son attempts to court the most forceful and boisterous one of all. He decides to perform one last altruistic act by killing an asari mobster and just as he is about to embrace Kalahira's calling, Commander Shepard of the Alliance shows up with a suicide mission for which she needs him. Jane Shepard has returned from the dead. Her last memory is the Normandy SR-1 shattered in space by a Collector ship's beam. She has awakened on a Cerberus space station. Two years have passed since the attack and her former comrades, the Alliance and the Citadel Council do not take kindly to her supposed resurrection or her association with the Illusive Man's organization. Meanwhile, Collectors abduct human colonists in the Terminus Systems and no one seems to care. For Thane, death was his ten years of battle sleep driven only by his thirst for vengeance, while for Shepard, the two years unconscious while strangers did and undid with her body without her consent. Together they will find their way back to life and with their comrades venture into the bowels of the galaxy from where no ship has ever returned. Never in his life, he thought that everything he scorns about the earthlings will turn out to be exactly what attracts him to this girl. Will his pride be able to resist the charm of a sweet soul, or will he sacrifice his personal beliefs for a chance to heal his own broken soul?
