A Hanahaki narrative poem about one-sided love between two soulmates. While one loves their best friend, the other loves them as if they are family. The poem symbolizes the heartache and anguish of the one-sided love, where the speaker is desperate to have their feelings reciprocated but is aware that this will never come to pass. The poem also conveys the bittersweet beauty of the bond between the two, even if it is not a romantic one.

"A soulmate is a person with whom one has a feeling of deep or natural affinity. This may involve similarity, love, romance, platonic relationships, comfort, intimacy, sexuality, sexual activity, spirituality, compatibility and trust."

Hanahaki Disease (花吐き病 (Japanese); 하나하키병 (Korean); 花吐病 (Chinese)) is a fictional disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. It ends when the beloved returns their feelings (romantic love only; strong friendship is not enough), or when the victim dies. It can be cured through surgical removal, but when the infection is removed, the victim's romantic feelings for their love also disappear. The day Sero sat in his dorm alone, lost for breath, coughing until yellow petals poured from his mouth, that was the day he knew he was deep, too deep. Other Warnings: contains big gae, a lot of angst, possible character death, cursing.
