Alec was born in the walls, never to see the outside walls. He was perfectly fine with it until he reached his twenty-first birthday, when he had to attend the Burning. He hasn't been the same ever since.
Neil was kidnapped from his family to live in the walls. He has been a problem for the Heads since day one. The Burning has never been an obstacle for him since he doesn't attend it when the time comes.
One day, Alec is placed in charge of Neil by the most powerful Head, he does his best to keep him out of trouble. Falling in love was just a road they both had to cross.
When the Burning comes along, Alec realizes that the Heads, the people that he believed could do no wrong, have been running a corrupt society where only the wealth are able to strive.
