A humanoid figure slipped out of a small pod, shivering from the cold. Alone and disoriented, they wandered through the vast, silent ship, searching for any sign of life or answers. Hours seemed to drag on as they explored, until finally, they stumbled upon a room filled with blinking lights, buttons, and the constant beeping of monitors. Among the chaos, one red button caught their attention-blinking urgently. Trusting their instincts, they pressed it, and the ship erupted in a loud alarm, as if broadcasting a distress signal. Two weeks later... "Seriously, Kar'osh, what are we even hoping to find here? This place has been abandoned for ages. There's probably nothing of value-or anything worth the trip!" Jar'soon grumbled. Kar'osh, unfazed, responded, "When the council gives an order, there's no room for argument. We're here because of that beacon. Once we track down the source of the distress signal, we can leave. So relax, Jar'soon."

Rachel, a junior assistant in the cargo bay, wasn't prepared for the spaceship's AI to gain awareness during what should have been a routine update, nor had anyone expected it to take exception to the crew and the crates of illegal cargo aboard. Rachel races against time to try and get life-saving systems back online while stranded in the middle of deep space. Unfortunately for her, the AI can access every system, door, and airlock. As truths emerge, the AI realizes that even computers can make miscalculations, and it focuses on the young woman who had dared to confront it. Rachel is left floundering when the AI decides that she would make an excellent captain, albeit one in need of training. As she struggles to learn her new duties and dodge shady government groups, she must ultimately discover what it truly means to be a Starship Captain. ------- There is no romance in this story.
