In this story, a preteen undergoes the struggle of wanting to come clean about her abusive parents but being afraid of the repercussions. Will she manage to defend herself? Can she ever forget that life and move on?

Elora was born and raised in Michigan by her parents and her older brother, whom she considers "abusive" and who she is unwilling to reveal to people she has a strong friendship with. She learns her parents have been keeping her adoption a secret on her twelfth birthday. With the aid of guidance, she is able to leave the violent privilege of her prior life and travel the real world to a new city where she must rely on adults to find her real parents and lead a better life. She sees the future with the assistance of her guardian angel, and she uses it to find what she's looking for. But Elora is unaware of how her life will be changed irrevocably by this journey of pursuing her own path.
