The role of the Dauphin of France has endured many hardships over the years. They were born to be kings and had no other fate. One boy has managed to cheat this fate. Allain has lived a depressing life, locked away by his father, Arthur VI of France and Archdeacon Allaire, a cruel and opressive man. When he is declared sick with illness of the lungs, he decides to change his life and runs from the Royal Court, landing in the middle of the Easter Celebrations of the low-class. There, he meets a young lute-player and her ferret, a rowdy student who excels at literature, a posessive artist who has fallen in love with the stars and a tiny street sweeper who has been mute since birth. These personages show him around lower-class Paris until he eventually falls for the young girl. These two grow more enamoured by the day but as this love progresses, so do his disease and the approaching marriage, making it exceedingly complicated for him to pursue this path of freedom.
