The only thing that is certain is that they belong to each other, they somehow complete each other. An angel and a demon being platonic (or romantic?) soulmates is pretty much unheard-of, but it is not one of a kind.
A trip through the multiverse will show us just how much Crowleys and Aziraphales fates are linked with each other, no matter the circumstances around them

From the gate of Eden to the end of the world, they have been there for each other- tempting, thwarting, and even helping (not that their respective head offices need to know). As the millennia go on, the two grow closer and closer, and there are words that both off them need to say, but neither do. It only takes the end of the world for them to get their heads on straight. How could he not? The angel and demon pairing had been best friends for over 6,000 years and Crowley's voice was just so convincing. But oh boy, was he wrong. Mere weeks after the failed Armageddon, Heaven and Hell grew restless. They felt cheated out of a much needed war- a war that the angels should have won. After many days of arguing, Heaven and Hell shockingly came to an agreement- they would host a series of challenges, games if you will, to prove which side was better. When both Crowley and Aziraphale refuse to participate, Heaven and Hell punish them with something so awful that the boys wish they had just stayed on their respective sides and followed the Plan.
