A Lion King non-cannon compliant one-shot in which Mufasa survives.

Too late, too late.
Too later was Mufasa in finding his way back to consciousness to stop Simba from leaving the gorge at Scar's words. But he knew enough.
Defying all of Scar's hopes, Mufasa leaves the gorge alive, swearing to return and punish his brother for his treachery - but not until he has found his son.
But fate is not so kind. Simba lives his years in the jungle, unaware that his father is both alive and searching for him, while Mufasa chases dead end after dead end, having lost his edge to his injuries from the gorge.
Yet there is hope, upon the separate arrivals of Nala and Rafiki in the jungle.
