After Rae Campbell is murdered by her abductor, she wakes in a world that exists parallel to ours- one which diverged in 1761, when a band of Scottish Highlanders joined with the Skin-Walking Kituwah tribe to oust the British from Appalachia. 

Rae becomes a Spirit-Walker; she walks in the skin of the leader's mate, Ceallach, who like Rae, suffered a wrongful death. The leader and Rae make a pact- she will help him discover his mate's murderer, and he will grant her safety and shelter while teaching her the ways of this new world. 

When Ceallach's wolf-skin begins to awaken within Rae's body, however, everything changes. With an unwanted mate bond that is impossible to ignore, and an entire realm at risk, Rae must make a choice: to embrace her new destiny, or forge her own path in this new world.
