In the world of Inopia mages stand on the top of the food chain, their power is absolute so every child dreams of become one. At birth every child possesses slight magic abilities of no particular element, generally limited to levitation of small things like rocks or the occasional scoop of mashed potato. Upon reaching the age of thirteen a child will partake in a coming of age ceremony. The ceremony involves a magical implement referred to as an "inspector". The inspector reads a persons elemental affinity from one of eight, fire, ice, water, earth, electricity, plants, life or death.
