Aubrey, isolated both by nature and design, struggled to step out on his own once his only anchor in the neighborhood moved away. Gordon and Anne; practically his surrogate parents, the only people he could socialize with. Once they were gone, he found himself scrambling through darkness, clinging to old habits; harmless, but embarrassing, strange habits that he couldn't even hope to explain. Though he often stumbled and wished those habits away, they-miraculously-brought him to the light he'd been missing for years.
