Peter remembered.
He remembered his life before the bite, before he became Spider-Man, before he became an Avenger, before he lost Aunt May... When he used to look to the skies in admiration. As the Avengers flew overhead. Fighting to protect themselves and others from world-ending threats.
He remembered. Believing that... That the Avengers were unshakeable idols. That not even a blast from any god could end them. What they devoted their lives to, they did by choice. The heroes never struggled with things normal humans did, from something as small as cold to PTSD. And under no circumstances did they ever waver.
But after genuinely becoming a hero himself? Peter found his belief to be completely wrong. He was always afraid, always on guard, and constantly alone... As a result, Peter never got a chance at the life he wanted before the bite. And it killed him.
Sometimes, just occasionally, when his eyes had a spark of hope left in them, he dreamed. Dreamed of meeting someone that truly understood him. Someone that went through what he did, that didn't tell him to just "walk it off" or that he was only "wallowing in self-pity." One day, while recovering from a mission with the other Avengers, a strange portal appears in the common room, and he finally gets that chance.
