When a mysterious woman, Marie Andala, appears in the small Maine town of Argyle Cove, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Marie seems determined to avoid letting her secrets come to light until a series of events draws her into a complicated relationship with Fisher Dallmen, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and a young daughter. Despite her reservations, Marie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Fisher and his daughter. Marie begins to fall in love, but struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her, a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Argyle Cove. As the town quickly becomes more pernicious than she signed up for, Marie realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards.

With her almost 20 year marriage beyond repair, Demi Meadows is sick of playing games and being taken for granted. She needs something real, and someone who truly loves her instead of cheating on her for years. Her kids are almost out of the house, so it would be a perfect time to find a person to share her life with, and this time she isn't going to settle for anything less than the perfect person and the perfect love. But could that person be someone that she would never expect, like a one night stand that turns into a frequent visitor? Or is it too risky to go after someone who could rip her heart in two because of the different places they are in life and the similarities to her ex? What if perfect is an illusion? What if finding a perfect love is an illusion, because sometimes you can make your own perfect?
