Seventeen-year-old Faye has spent her entire life in a rundown, dangerous neighborhood. She's seen the violence, the poverty, and the drug use that surrounds her, and she knows that she doesn't want to be a part of it anymore. Despite the obstacles in her way, Faye is determined to make a better life for herself.

Faye's mother, Vivian, works long hours at a local factory to make ends meet even with a baby boy on the way, and her father, Magnus, is in and out of jail. Faye's older brother, Edric, is involved in a local gang and often tries to pressure her into joining, but Faye just barely refuses to be part of the violence and crime.

Faye's escape plan involves getting a college education, but her grades are suffering due to her home life and lack of resources. She tries to study at the local library, but it's always overcrowded and loud. She's also unable to afford a computer or other study materials.

Faye's luck changes when she meets a kind teacher who sees her potential and offers to tutor her after school. With his help, Faye begins to improve her grades and opens up about her dreams of going to college.

However, as Faye works hard to achieve her goals, the danger in her neighborhood only increases. One night, Edric is shot and killed in a gang-related incident, leaving Faye devastated.

Despite this tragedy, Faye remains focused on her education and is determined to make a better life for herself. She ultimately earns a scholarship to a prestigious university and leaves her dangerous neighborhood behind for good, however, would that mean Faye would have to leave her family behind too?
