In the bustling city of Ember, crime is a constant problem. But there's one investigator who seems to be able to solve any case that comes her way: Commoner Investigator Leilan. When a series of crimes are committed by individuals with a peculiar tattoo, Leilan takes it upon herself to solve the case. Enter Aleksander, heir to the throne, and the kind of person Leilan deems a pompous, arrogant bastard. He enlists her in his plans to reform Ember and they immediately butt heads. But as they delve deeper into the mysteries Ember has to offer, they both find that they had more in common than they originally thought.....
