After killing the stag and forcing the amplifier on Alina, the Darkling decides that letting Alina and Mal go might be a better investment. After all, the boy is only mortal, one day he will die and Alina will return to his waiting arms.
"I'm not going to kill you, Mal. I don't need to. Time will do it for me"

She did little to hide her shock. "What?"
"You can go, Alina." She narrowed her eyes and opened her mouth but he cut her off before she could spew whatever distrustful comments she had planned. "You and the tracker can go and live out your merry little lives. Have your 50 years, maybe even 70 if you're lucky, and when your fantasy crumbles around you, you will see that only you and I remain. You will return to my waiting arms."

The relationship between Alina and Aleksander is very much toxic throughout the story and it will for the most part remain toxic.
