After the world turned on the United States, WWIII began. The Superior Alliance released biochemical-warfare and ordered nuclear bombs, the United States was devastated. Radiation lingered, proving fatal to those who were exposed and weather became dangerous, wildly unpredictable. Now, only one city remains. A safe haven built in New Jersey, a city surrounded by new border technology that promised to protect against the elements. The "New Society'' believes that structure and order is the cure to humanity. That a shot when you turn 13 to eliminate mental illness and pain would be the key to a perfect civilization. 300 years later, Thea Carson was born into the New Society. Her parents died when she was 6, the government said they were exposed to the radiation. She got The Antidote when she was 13 but nothing changed, it didn't work. She's a flaw in the system, a crack in society, she's lost. Until, she meets a boy that claims he's from the Barren that changes everything. Did her parents really die from radiation? Is there even radiation outside the border at all or is there something else that scares them even more?
