This is a story about a man named Mark who has a rare genetic disorder called fatal familial insomnia, which causes progressive insomnia leading to hallucinations, dementia, and eventually death. Mark tells his boyfriend, Alex, about his condition and breaks up with him, hoping to spare him from watching him die. Mark moves to a hospice care facility, where he spends his final months painting and writing. Meanwhile, Alex tries to move on, but he can't forget about Mark. After Mark's death, Alex finds out the truth about his condition and writes a book about their life together, which becomes a bestseller. The story deals with love, loss, grief, and the choices we make out of love for others.
