1900 England
15 year old Elizabeth, "Lizzie", Banfield, was no stranger to hardship, having grown up in the slums of London with her single, prostitute mother and younger brother, John, and sister Millie. But when her mother dies, leaving the children orphaned, her rich and vindictive aunt swoops in. Without room for discussion, she opts to separate the siblings: sending her brother and sister to live with one of her rich friends and Lizzie to a home for troubled girls up north. Despite Lizzie's pleas to stay with her siblings, her aunt does not budge and gives her the ultimatum of the home or a workhouse. Seeing no choice, Lizzie agrees to go, with the hope that she could reunite with Millie and John once she reaches 18. Lizzie fights to cope with her new situation as she faces a harsh headmistress, strict rules and way of life in girl's home.
Several months into her stay, another string of unfortunate events take place ,making Lizzie's circumstances go from bad to worse. Just as Lizzie's life seems to hit bottom, a ray of hope shines through. Piece by piece her life begins to rebuild itself, growing flowers from ashes.
