Erethism, more commonly known as Mad Hatter Disease, is a form of mercury poisoning from inhaling toxic mercury fumes for an extended period of time. These fumes can cause the patient to experience hallucinations, irritability, depression, shyness, loss of strength, social anxiety, pain, irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, and tremors. In more serious cases it can cause delirium, personality changes, and memory loss.

Erethism was most common in Europe in the 1800's, as mercury had been being used in medicine and manufacturing. Hat manufacturers had been curing felt using Mercurous Nitrate, resulting them in inhaling mercury fumes and developing mercury poisoning, resulting in the term "mad as a hatter."

Their job is to keep Phoenix alive while he tries to make money reappear and find a cure to Gold fever. Which turns out to be more challenging than they thought, as they find out someone is tailing Phoenix with the intention to kill.
