Ikari, has been Neytiri's friend since childhood. But she had left on a mission not knowing Neytiri and her family had left. Ikari doesn't know Neytiri had more children, considering she only met Neteyam. 

Ikari, flys to the Metkayina villiage but hears Neytiri's cry's as a mothers grief flows through the cold salty air. Ikari flys down and sees many children the only one she has ever met is dead. She never personally knew Neteyam, she was only around when he was from ages 1-3 then left on a long mission.
