Jael Sloan Grant was an orphan to begin with. Her father died before she was born, her mother died in childbirth. She was sent to live with her aunt and uncle until her aunt suddenly died when she was six years old, changing her life forever. Eventually, she winds up in the care of some family friends, where she grows up being taught about faith, love, and family. 

Jael's name is pronounced Jay-elle.
