It's been over a year since Gingerbrave visited the Crème Republic. During a visit with Madeleine's family, Espresso expresses his doubts that Madeleine, the pampered, spoiled, upper class, celebrity that he is, could even survive a minute in the lower city living the way Espresso did when he was young. Madeleine takes up the challenge to live a full week in the slums of the lower city without any help from the upper city. If he succeeds, then Espresso has to write a full thesis paper on why light magic is the best magic. If he doesn't, then Madeleine will have to take the mid-term test for Espresso's class.
