Maria is punished to live as a human for a month after she accidently kills a human, unbeknownst to her that Carlisle witnessed the entire thing and knows she is a Fairy. She ends up going to the same school Carlisle attends. Carlisle watches over and protects her, especially from people who try to bully her for her purple hair. He sees it as his way of quietly assisting her through her punishment. Until he finds out one day that the accident might not have been a mistake.
