In which ༺ a girl still reeling from grief crosses paths with a man who is broken with a dark past, and she can't tell if he will save her, or turn her life into more hell.

Athena Grace Gilbert was a firework. The sun, shimmering and shining with love over those around her, but sometimes a flame. - willing to fiercely protect those that she loves or against those who cross her. She was extremely intelligent, top of her class, co-captain to Caroline Forbes her best friend as a cheerleader. As a friend she was loyal and caring, also silly and protective. As a sister, to her twin Elena Gilbert, she was known as the Momma Bear, only 3 minutes older than Elena she looked out for her and Jeremy like her life depended on it. Elena and Athena hadn't always gotten along, twin sister rivalry and whatnot but.. when it came down to it, they'd die for each other.

When the Gilbert's car went over Wickery Bridge, a part of Athena died. Her parents, the ones who - when Athena protected everyone else - would protect her. Athena felt hopeless. Nothing was the same anymore. She would lock herself in her room and listen to music and paint and never come out. She spent her summer that way, slowly drifting from her family and friends who adored her.

But for Athena, a new school year meant a new start. She wouldn't stand to be that weak girl she was once before. She would break out of her shell and not spend the rest of her high school years in sadness.

But a new year wasn't the only thing different... the Salvatore brothers came to town, leaving chaos and mystery in their wake. Athena's life was brought into shambles as soon as she felt it pick up again. She begins having odd experiences, and is made to question her identity, and everything she knows about love. --but hey, Athena was a bookworm....
