Every couple of years, a girl from each village, town, and city in the kingdom is sent to the palace of the Black Queen as a tribute. And this time, twelve-year-old Sable is the one to go from her village.

Sable can't say she's ever been particularly attached to her village. (Being reviled all your life can do that sometimes.) But, it's the only home she's ever known. And if she must leave, she certainly wouldn't have chosen to go live (or die, or be enslaved, it's not certain yet) under the tyrannous Black Queen.

Sable also barely knows how to interact with other people. So she only hopes that she might survive in the palace in whatever capacity she can manage.

Just as she has all her life.
