Laura Mason had been a Pogue since day one. Though her family lived on Figure Eight, her dad had grown up as a Pogue, and he'd taught her it was important to never forget your roots. When she'd first met JJ Maybank, who had introduced her to the Pogues, she'd realized how right her father was, and had been a Pogue ever since. That was in eighth grade. Now she was in eleventh, and their friend group had been devastated by tragedy.
When John B. Routledge's father, Big John, disappeared, it was devastating for both Laura and John B. He'd sort of been the father figure of all the Pogues, not just him, and his disappearance had left a big hole in their lives. Now, the couple is navigating their lives without him, and getting thrown into a centuries-old local treasure hunt certainly isn't going to help matters, nor is their growing connection with a certain Kook Princess.
