At an early age, children develop a "light" or a power that gives them the ability to do what many can not. The upper castes usually possess a powerful light since they only marry those who carry the stronger genes. Each person will get into a special academy and train to use their powers to get rid of evil. Many of these evil beings do not have a "light" rather they have what is called a "shadow". Eleanor Burke is considered a low caste because of what her family is known to have. Eleanor does not receive her "light" until an older age which becomes the rarest and most powerful form of energy.
