natsu never even thought twice about the possibility of having a human-ish mother until she literally saves his life and those he cares about...

when natsu goes on a dangerous job with Lucy and the team he doesn't think he will run into anyone life altering, especially after Igneels disappearance when he was small and after all that's happened since, so when a woman literally comes in on wings of golden flames with a phoenix tattoo on her back he's rightfully puzzled. she uses her magic to heal all of their wounds and disappears into what appears to be golden dust and his dreams seem to be leading him right to her but he cant put the pieces together with so many missing.

later at the guild as they're recounting their tales of the mission the master is oddly pensive, natsu demands to know who she is as he has taken an interest in the woman. macarov recounts his brief meeting with the mage and how she's known as the phoenix due to her only for sure magic being the celestial fire under her feet. the rest of her magic being widely unknown. The only other known fact about her is that she's looking for her son, Natsu, And that shes trying to stop a war between the heavens.

natsu goes looking for the mage and seems to find more than he bargained for on a journey to find out who he really is and where he comes from before igneel raised him.
