During the Gilded Age of New York, Sofia, a young and ambitious countess, travels to New York City to forge a path of her own and distance herself from her demanding family.

But she knows money means freedom.

Her goal in New York is to find a wealthy husband for support. Enter the charming and notorious bachelor, William de Graaf, who shares an instant spark with Sofia. As their relationship deepens, Sofia finds herself falling in love with William for who he is rather than for his money.

Unfortunately, Sofia has competition in Charlotte, the season's most loved debutante from a wealthy family, who also has her sights set on William.

Amidst Charlotte's scheming, Sofia must come to terms with her past and figure out if William is really husband material.
