Boris Pavlikovsky, a 17 year old hockey player on a local team in Los Angeles, meets a boy named Theo Decker at one of his games. Theo's stepmother, Xandra, has been attending these games and getting wasted at the rink's bar, dragging Theo with her. The 16 year old is forced to sit through each game, watching his stepmom get more and more drunk. One boring Thursday night of staring blankly at the ice, a particular player catches Theo's eye. The two boys end up running into each other and a friendship quickly develops between them. As they get to know each other, they grow closer and drift away from everybody else. The two come to know every little detail about the other down to the freckles on their faces. Their bond is so strong and unbreakable, that is, if you'd even consider it something as small and simple as a friendship...
