The world is full of stories. It's one of the things that's been there since the beginning times. It's how the world keeps track of history.
The wars, the rulers, the way times were.
One of the most dangerous and well known times was the medieval ages. The time of many gods, and the time of only one. There are stories of great Kings and Queens. Wars, and pelages that killed many. Stories of fairies and mythical creatures.
Where did they come from? All stories need an origin. All stories need a first hand experience. Even the tails of Magic and all things unbelievable.
In the dark ages, anything was believable.
Back then there were stories of magic creatures giving men swords, so they could rule Kingdoms. Stories of powerful beings wandering the earth looking for pure of heart.
Well. what if those stories aren't just stories? What if the fables and fairy tails we heard growing up actually happened? Just a long time ago.
What if, all things magic and inhuman was forced into hiding after a century long war? That's why, nothing magic happens today. Maybe there's a door? maybe they seek revenge? Who's to stop them from killing off humans and taking the mother Earth for themselves?

If the world wanted him to be evil so badly...then he would be a malicious tyrant that rules not with an iron fist, but a diamond one. Of course, there will be many who will fight back.
