Faoladhean is part of one of the last groups of traditional Picts who are struggling to maintain their autonomy as other kings rise and fall in the aim of creating a unified Alba (Scotland). After her traveling group is ambushed by Danes, Faoladhean is taken captive and brought to Northumbria to be given to a Danish earl.

Determined to escape and return home to honor the oath she swore to protect her family, Faoladhean must decide whether her assumed destiny or the unknown is the path she will follow. Then she finds herself in the company of Uhtred and his men, farther from home than she'd ever dreamed.
