Cody leads the 212th battalion. His days are somehow complicated and simple, that constant litany of hurry up and wait every soldier hates knowing but still, there's a rhythm to it and he's as settled as a person in his place can be. But he has a problem, see, there's a mission coming up. He has to look at the troopers he's known for years, the ones he calls his vode, his siblings, and he has to pick one knowing no matter how good they are, no matter how skilled, this is one mission they won't come back from.

"Can I help you, soldier?" Cody asks the trooper at his door, armour just barely painted yet scuffed enough they can't be a shiny.

"I'm here to volunteer, sir."
