Between the Veil

The mazes of Hettezar wind and twist around me, clawing at my heels as I dig my feet in. I curse that I haven't gotten my father vampiric speeds. I can hear the guards pounding steps behind me almost close enough to grab me and toss me back into that Dark, must ridden oubliette.

"Lavrina, we have to run faster!" My Faerie mate calls to me, his voice panic soaked and dripping with fear.

I can now see the exit of this humongous hell they call a maze and hope springs into my heart. All of a sudden I see an arrow fly past my sweat soaked shoulder and plunge into the back of my mate. He drops to the ground immediately and I slam down on my knees next to him.

Tears stream down my face as he stutters out, "Run Lavrina, run as fast as you can."

And just like that Malarin, the dark faerie prince is dead.
