Hugo never really questioned where he came from.
He didn't have a reason to. The area he grew up in was riddled with orphans. The people were far too busy to look up who his parents were before they probably died horribly like everyone else in this godforsaken town. Whatever. It didn't matter to him. All that mattered was survival, and then, after escaping the town with Donella, pleasing her.
He had a family. It wasn't blood. He was content with that.
Which is of course, when it all goes to shit.

The book was hard-covered, and completely coated with dust. It was huge. He used his gloved hands to swipe the thick layer of dust off, fully dropping to his knees as he read the name engraved on the cover. He let out a shaky breath. Ulla. He dropped it back into the hole, his shoulders tensing as a cloud of dust rose around him. That was his mother's name. A million thoughts began to run through his mind. One kept rising above the rest: why was it hidden? Why-why was his dad hiding it from him? "Kid? What is it?" Naturally, Eugene was the first one by his side, a strong hand on his shoulder. "Mom?"
