World War I was earth-shattering. A war to end all wars, it was called. The battles were long, excruciating, and bloody. Never before had the deaths been so severe. Men were lucky to come home with their limbs firmly in place. But some men had a scar that wasn't seen on the body. They came home different from before. It was initially called shell-shock. Hysteria, hypersensitivity, insomnia, muscle spasms, irritability. All signs of shell-shock. Even worse than shell-shock itself were the treatments of the individuals. They were shunned in their own veteran community, called cowards. They were electrocuted, starved, and executed. They received no pension or honor for their service. Even their own families abandoned them. Shell-shock is a mental illness that nowadays is called PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Even today those who have been diagnosed with PTSD are still not treated with the respect they deserve. This is a story of a struggle. A struggle of a young boy coming home fresh from WWI with shell-shock. This is a story of the perpetual love from his sister, who becomes his caretaker. Faced with obstacles they have never imagined before, their bond will be put to the test.

England 1921. For fifty handicapped veterans left without home or job after WW1, the only person standing between them and utter destitution is Olivia Altringham. Lacking sufficient funds and a support network, Olivia has managed to keep her veteran's programme running by sheer determination and force of personality. Now, a soldier she had an affair with during the war has suddenly reappeared in her life, forcing her to re-examine their time together and how she ended their affair. At the same time, mysterious and deadly events unfold on the estate that threaten to unbalance the safe environment she has created for her handicapped charges. The times, and circumstances, are rapidly changing and Olivia realises she must change with them -- or risk going under completely. 🔔 #1 in Historic Fiction May 2020 🔔 Featured on the Wattpad Hidden Gems list May/June 2020 🔔 1st place in the Jelsa Awards 2019 🔔 1st place in the One Million Project Awards 2018 in the category Historic/General fiction. 🔔 1st place in the Asteria Awards 2018 in the category of Historical Fiction 🔔 1st place in the Rise Awards 2018 in the category of Historical Fiction
