Copperstar, the leader of Tigerclan is relaxing in his den when Owlleaf, one of the clans medicine cats, informs him of a prophecy. "When a red kit is welcomed, an assassination shall cause the dawn of the clans and a new life." while Owlleaf and Copperstar discuss what to do a commotion is heard from outside. When the two toms go to check it out they see Thistleclaw, a Tigerclan warrior, with a red kit dangling from her jaws. Owlleaf shoots Copperstar a horrified look and then the kit wakes up. Leopardwillow spat, "you should know not to kill warriors during things so ridiculous as border skirmishes Starclan doesn't want us to kill each other." By now her fur stood on end but Flamestar looked terrifyingly calm. "I suppose, but the way I see it there should only be one clan not two. How ridiculous our ancestors decided it." Timberheart leapt off the boulder "Is that a threat?!" he growled. Flamestar thought her words over "Maybe. Lakeclan to me!" she yowled before either of them had time to respond. The four Clans-GrassClan, OakClan, PineClan and WillowClan-have lived in relative balance since the Clans began. They kept separate, save for their Gathering every full moon. While they had their disagreements, they kept a relatively harmonious existence. They had always been four Clans and it was believed that they always would be. For as long as they kept the warrior code alive, the Clans would continue to thrive. That's when the troubles began. One long, hot, dry greenleaf, a fire swept through GrassClan. Some cats were lost but those that survived resumed life in their now scorched territory. They knew that life was going to be harder than ever, but they could not abandon the only home they had ever known. The next couple of seasons, GrassClan struggled to feed themselves with little prey to be found. Yet, they refused to give up. Newleaf found GrassClan weak and starving but with hope on their horizon. Their oldest queen had moved into the nursery. Then, disaster struck a second time. Greencough swept through the Clan, snuffing out the new lives before they had even begun. The dreaded sickness left its mark, stealing the future of the Clan and all hope with it. Life had taken its toll on GrassClan. All that remained were their young leader, their deputy, their elderly medicine cat, one warrior and three elders. They had no apprentices, no she-cats and no kits. The once vibrant Clan was on the brink of dying out. The four Clans would soon be no more. Then, at the next Gathering, StarClan brought a message to the Clans: GrassClan must survive. There had always been four Clans and that could not change. They proposed that volunteers from the other three Clans should join GrassClan to help restore it. Cats were given one moon to consider the offer.
