In Career Districts like One, Two, and sometimes Four, to participate in the Games wasn't a death sentence, but an honor- an opportunity for glory and to memorialize your name in infamy. When the Sixty-Eighth Hunger Games came around, there was no one who craved that chance more than seventeen-year-old Blaze Rosales. After all, reputations especially matter in the luxury District of One.
Being the youngest daughter of low-level ruby miners, Blaze has always had an inhuman drive to succeed, golden eyes clearly set on the prize. No one, not even her older sister, was going to get in her way. Despite her family's low rank, when it was time for the Academy to decide who would volunteer to represent their District in the Games, all her hard work would pay off.
Blaze Rosales is selected as District One's female tribute to compete for that bloody crown.
This is what she wanted. At least, this is what she thought she wanted. But when the clock finally winds down, and there are youthful faces like hers to finally put to the training mannequins, she realizes the bloodstains from that crown just may not be worth it anymore.
The price for this glory she so ruthlessly craved will cost her more than she anticipated. It will cost her her soul. Something that once you lose it, it's ten times harder to get it back.
