Michelle and her teenage daughter, Kiera have been victims of domestic violence at the hands of their husband/stepfather, Shane. Just when all hope seems lost, Chicago PD Detective, Jay Halstead steps in at the right moment. After the police lock up their abuser for good, Michelle signs guardianship of her daughter over to Jay for her own protection. This comes as a shock to him because he has no other close family and he has never taken care of a child before. 

What happens when Jay suddenly starts to feel a connection with Kiera like no other? How far will he go to protect her? Will Kiera be able to see Jay as a father figure? The depths go deeper as the two of them learn more about themselves and each other, all while trying to make the city a safer place for all.
