With her older brother currently fighting in Afghanistan, Marie's mom moves Marie and her little brother to California into a house with her new boyfriend who is a violent drunk.
She lives day to day until she meets Jake, a popular boy who attends the school Marie is joining at the end of summer. He pulls her out of her shell and shows her how to have fun and love again.
