Regulus looked like he was going to burst into tears, or run out the room. James couldn't let him, wouldn't let him witness this first hand.
The screams continued, sometimes it was just loud sobs, and that broke James completely.
Regulus tried to go to him, like he knew he would, so James wrapped his arms around him and sat them on the ground. Regulus tried to struggle but eventually gave up and let himself cry in James' arms. James cried too.
He wanted to cover their ears but at the same time he felt he deserved to hear this. He hadn't understood how bad it was, he let Sirius go there. Knew he was dreading it, but only going so Regulus wouldn't be alone.

"Reggie? Regulus? Whats wrong?" James tried to reach out to him, but Regulus pulled himself away. His chest felt like it was being ripped out, his throat being scratched violently by the attack of petals climbing up. His coughing got louder and more violent before finally a handful of sunflowers fell into Regulus' hand. James stared down at him, an unknown expression on his face but Regulus didn't have time to study him. He tried to hide the petals but he knew he was to late. James had already seen them, and he could see the obvious splatter of blood on his chin. "What the fuck just happened? Are those sunflowers?" James once again tried to reach out to him, going for his hands, wanting to get a closer look, but Regulus snatched his hands away and took a few more steps back. "You- you didn't see that, do you hear me? You didn't see it" And before he knew it, he was already at the bottom of the astronomy tower stairs, leaving James standing in the middle of the tower.
