Sentience. It's a funny word, isn't it? So very small for something so infinitely vast. We use it to separate ourselves from everything else. Without it, we'd be no more superior than a fleck of dust, per say. The only problem is...nobody actually knows what sentience is. Humans have a strange fixation with shooting stuff out into space, looking for whatever fits our personal definition of sentience.
